For Processing

Soybeans grown for processing account for the majority of Canada’s rapid growth in soybean production. Backed by a well-established grain handling infrastructure, Canada is prepared to deliver this expanding supply to customers worldwide.

Growing supply, driven by innovation

New short-season varieties are motivating more Canadian farmers to grow commodity soybeans for processing, in addition to the premium food-grade soybeans for which are known. Between 2007 and 2021, Canadian acreage devoted to commodity soybeans increased by 83%.

For importers, this rapid rise in production means Canada is becoming a reliable alternative source of commodity soybeans for processing into a wide array of products, including protein, vegetable oil, animal feed, biofuel, pharmaceuticals and an expanding range of industrial uses.

Reliable product delivery

Buyers can also count on Canada’s modern infrastructure to move large volumes of soybeans quickly, efficiently and consistently.

As a major grain-producing nation, Canada has hundreds of high-throughput elevators and inland terminals. These facilities are linked by rail and road to high-capacity shipping ports on the west coast and in Eastern Canada.

Canadian oilseed processors handle more than 1.8 million tonnes of soybeans in an average year. The three major soybean processing plants are located in Ontario (Windsor and Hamilton) and Quebec (Bécancour). Together, they have the capacity to process about 10,000 tonnes of oilseeds per day, including both soybeans and canola.

Smaller facilities provide cold press/solvent-free extraction through plants at Winkler, Manitoba, Beloeil, Quebec and Winchester, Ontario.

Grain companies and exporters are continually upgrading and investing in these services, and are ready to expand their use for global soybean customers.

Continuous improvement

Canada is making a real commitment to the expansion of commodity soybean production. In consultation with global customers, our vibrant plant research sector is developing traits that meet evolving product requirements and build on advantages like the high protein levels encouraged by cooler climates.
